Seiko Matic Chronometer Ref. 6246-9000. This model is Japan's first domestically produced automatic chronometer, developed based on the renowned "6216" movement. At the time, "luxury watches = manual winding" was the norm, but the arrival of this 62 Chronometer heralded an era where automatic watches gained recognition as luxury items. To emphasize its dedicated automatic movement (no manual winding function), the crown is characteristically positioned at the 4 o'clock location. However, in 1966, following a request from Switzerland, the use of the "chronometer" designation in its in-house certification was discontinued, making this a rare model with production ending after only about one year. The case back features the gold lion medal, the emblem certifying its chronometer status. Using dedicated components for the dial, case, and crown, this piece stands as the pinnacle of Seiko's automatic watches, rivalling the high-end Swiss watches of the era.
