DANIEL ROTH Datomax Big Date 208.X.60 Ellipsocurvex 18K White Gold NUMERO 15263 Automatic - Independent Haute Horlogerie - 1999 DESCRIPTION EN: For sale: DANIEL ROTH Datomax Big Date Ref. 208.X.60 - NUMERO 15263 - Solid 18K White Gold - Automatic - Ellipsocurvex Case A landmark piece of modern independent haute horlogerie. Daniel Roth was the master watchmaker who revived Breguet in the 1970s before founding his own manufacture in 1988. His patented Ellipsocurvex case is one of the most complex cases ever made — double-curved elliptical form, 30 hours of machining per case. DYNASTY Grandson and great-grandson of watchmakers from Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He grew up in a watchmaking workshop in the south of France. He was born predestined. THE SCHOOL OF GIANTS - 1960s/70s • Started in Nice learning technique • Went to Vallée de Joux, the cradle of haute horlogerie • Audemars Piguet: 7 years there, he was the only watchmaker from outside the valley accepted at Le Brassus. He mastered complications and ultra-thin movements. • Breguet (1974-1987): The Chaumet brothers called him to SAVE Breguet during the quartz crisis. He did what no one else did: moved production to Switzerland in 1976, rescued Abraham-Louis Breguet's archives, created the brand's modern identity: guilloché dial, coin case, blue pomme hands. He is considered the man who most transformed modern Breguet. THE INDEPENDENT - 1988 In 1988 he opened his own brand in Le Sentier, amidst the snow of the Jura Mountains. At the time, nobody was doing that. He was one of the FIRST independent designers in history, before the term even existed, along with George Daniels. He paved the way for F.P. Journe 10 years later. You created its trademark: • Double-Ellipse Case: between square and round, iconic to this day • La Montre Objet d'Art: the watch as an art object • 1990 Tourbillon made in-house, gained worldwide acclaim • Perpetual calendar, chronograph, retrograde - all in-house mechanisms THE SALE AND THE DISAPPEARANCE • 1994: sold to The Hour Glass of Singapore • 2000: bought by Bulgari, merged with Gérald Genta • 2015: Bulgari retires the brand to focus on Bulgari itself THE RENAISSANCE - 2023 After almost 10 years of silence, LVMH revived the brand, now with La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, led by Jean Arnault. They returned to the original: Souscription tourbillon in yellow gold, internal movement DR001, solid gold dial with Clou de Paris guilloche.
