Original Seikomatic Self-Dater Water 50 Proof, Diashock 39 Jewels, Suwa Cal. 395 This is a seldom-seen Seikomatic J13060, a historically important model regarded as a prototype of the first automatic Grand Seiko series. Released in the early 1960s, it predates the Seikomatic Chronometer 6245-9000, which later evolved into the renowned Grand Seiko 62 Automatic Series. The watch is powered by the high-jeweled Cal. 395 movement from Suwa Seikosha. This automatic caliber was Seiko’s flagship movement of the era, featuring: 39 jewels with Diashock protection Date complication with bidirectional quickset 18,000 bph beat rate Automatic winding only (no manual wind capability) The Cal. 395 represented Seiko’s ambition to compete with Swiss chronometers and laid the groundwork for the high-grade movements that would define the Grand Seiko line. Condition: Crystal: Acrylic crystal in very good shape, with only a few light peripheral scratches barely noticeable without close inspection. Dial: Excellent vintage condition with minimal surface marks visible only under magnification. The printing remains crisp and legible. Crown: Unsigned crown shows very little wear. All functions, including the quickset date, operate correctly. Case: Stainless steel case is in very good condition. No major dents; only light peripheral scratches, primarily on the case back. Case back: Though worn smooth with age, under magnification, the original dolphin-and-crown emblem with the number 39 can still be faintly seen in the center, surrounded by the engraved markings J13060, SEIKO WATERPROOF 50, and STAINLESS STEEL. Collectability & Rarity: The Seikomatic J13060 is highly prized among collectors due to its role as a transitional piece between Seikomatic and Grand Seiko. Few examples are known to exist today, and they seldom appear on the market. When they do, they are often in heavily worn condition, making well-preserved specimens like this one especially desirable. Its combination of historical importance, technical innovation, and rarity makes it a significant acquisition for collectors of early Seiko and Japanese horology. Overall, this Seikomatic Self-Dater J13060 is in highly presentable vintage condition and carries exceptional historical value as a bridge between Seiko’s early automatic innovations and the birth of the Grand Seiko line.
