It takes the artisan 50 hours to complete a dial in the workshop dedicated specifically to this task within La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, using miniature painting techniques and working with oil paint. Over 30 colours are applied one by one with a paintbrush, using tiny, successive strokes, before the piece is dried in an oven heated to 100 °C. The result - captivating in its brightness, relief, and contrast - is further enhanced by the visual effect created by the separation between the glass and the dial. This is why the black triangle topped with a yellow arrow (the only fixed element on the dial indicating the time and the reference city) is applied directly underneath the glass, preventing it from restricting the movement of the mobile discs. The dial consists of three separate mobile discs, all of which can be adjusted via a single crown: – The large, exterior, double-layered coloured disc features the initials of cities. It can be rotated to align the reference city with the 12 o’clock position, or directly above the yellow arrow. – The central disc, which rotates continuously, is divided into two semi-circles (black and white) to distinguish between day and night. – The smallest disc at the centre also rotates continuously and displays the minutes, which are highlighted by a precise, contrasting minute circle.
