A very rare vintage Swiss steel pilot's chronograph by Dürer from the 1950s–1960s in absolutely exceptional condition. It is very rare to see Dürer watches on the market, and even rarer to find a vintage chronograph with these distinctive finishes. The brand is one of the many high-quality Swiss brands that were swept away by the advent of quartz and the ensuing crisis in traditional watchmaking. This brand appears to have been closely tied to the Heuer ecosystem. It uses the highly reliable Valjoux 92 caliber (based on the 23), featuring a configuration modified and patented by Edouard Heuer in 1886, developed specifically by and for the Heuer brand to accommodate its own pivoting oscillating pinion system. Its level of finish is exceptional and highly unusual, featuring a beautiful alternation of colors between the copper-plated or gold-plated bridges and the brushed or finely finished steel springs and levers. Its level of finish and condition make it a rare gem worthy of the most discerning collections: * Movement: Valjoux 92 with a super-luxury finish, very elegant. COSC-certified, 17 jewels / 39-hour power reserve / 18,000 vibrations per hour. * Case: steel, water-resistant to 200 m, 38 mm diameter x 45 mm with lugs (37 mm without bezel), featuring double-faceted lugs that closely resemble those used by Heuer on its Autavia models. Thick steel screw-down case back with a very deep engraving reading “Chronograph 20 Atmos – Swiss Made – Waterproof – Antimagnetic – Incabloc – Stainless Steel.” Serial number 2170. The watch is in very good condition. * Bidirectional rotating aluminum bezel (very smooth) in good condition, with orange tritium still visible at the 60 mark. * Crown engraved with the brand’s logo (a “d” with hour and minute hands in the center). Pushers * Exceptional dial, black lacquered with two silver sub-dials for the 30-minute and seconds counters, and dual tachymeter scales—a base-1000 scale in white and a base-100 kilometer scale in red. Numerals and hour markers feature original, patinated eggshell-white tritium lume and are in very good condition. Impeccable markings: “Dürer – Geneva – 20 atm – Swiss Chronograph – T Swiss T,” indicating less than 7.5 mCi of tritium, as opposed to the radioactive radium used by some brands until the 1950s and 1960s. * 5 hands with impeccable tritium, perfectly matching the hour and minute hands and the chronograph hands. (Very slight pitting on the hour and minute hands visible under high magnification.) Sub-dial hands in baton (seconds) and arrow (30-minute) shapes. * Highly transparent Hesalite crystal in very good condition * Matching brown aftermarket strap, steel buckles, unsigned military-style (not the brand’s) A rare vintage chronograph from the 1950s, beautifully crafted and full of charm.
