The pictures speak for themselves. A design classic! Serviced by a master watchmaker in December 2021. The watch runs flawlessly and keeps excellent time. The case, dial, and hands are also in incredible condition. The watch has been worn very rarely in the past. Includes metal and leather straps with original IWC buckles. The Original Ingenieur with automatic Caliber 852 There are times when the essence of a manufacturer’s watchmaking artistry seems to be distilled into a single model. In the case of IWC, for example, the Reference 666—the first in the long line of Ingenieur models—belongs to this category of watches of the century. When IWC launched the Ingenieur as the flagship model of its men’s collection in 1954/55, the Schaffhausen-based manufacturer was synonymous with technically superbly engineered, unpretentious watches of uncompromising quality and reliability. True to this philosophy and the motto “probus Scafusia” (“Proven in Schaffhausen”), the original Ingenieur embodied this philosophy like no other model. It combined one of the finest automatic movements with an extremely durable case, protected against water and magnetic influences, into which all the experience IWC had gained over many years of manufacturing military watches had been poured. The first generation of the Ingenieur was a watch designed exclusively for men. It was intended primarily for professionals—such as engineers or doctors—who were exposed to strong electromagnetic fields in their work environments. In keeping with the elevated social status of its target audience, the Ingenieur featured a restrained, elegant design, though its construction made it quite large and thick by the standards of the time. The concept proved successful. The Ingenieur soon became a favorite among those who preferred a robust watch with a no-nonsense, masculine appearance. For more than 12 years, the original Ingenieur was sold in nearly unchanged form and in large quantities. The Reference 666 was powered by the Caliber 852x, the second, significantly improved version of the “IWC Automatic” developed under Technical Director Albert Pellaton. It was characterized by an extremely reliable eccentric winding mechanism (the so-called Pellaton winding) and, unlike the previous version (Caliber 85), was equipped with a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, fine adjustment via a regulator, and an increased beat rate (19,800 beats per hour). In excellent condition from my collection. I am selling privately and therefore exclude any liability for material defects. I am not a dealer but simply a collector with too many watches. The photos are part of the description. You are welcome to view or pick up the watch in Freiburg by appointment.
