Description

This watch is New and will come as a full set with all original Cartier accessories when purchased. The alligator leather bracelet is in superb shape as seen in the photo gallery. This timepiece was originally purchased in January 2026 as indicated on its warranty card. THE TANK À GUICHETS WRISTWATCH Created by Cartier in 1917, the Tank wristwatch has become an iconic timepiece. It is the culmination of Louis Cartier's reflections on watchmaking design, initiated at the turn of the 20th century. An aesthete and a visionary, he instigated many changes when he joined his father Alfred at the helm of the Maison in 1898. Louis Cartier urged his jewellers to adopt more geometric, clean-lined forms. He also applied this art of refined simplicity to watchmaking which, according to his vision, should embody the fusion of style and functionality. After the Santos, introduced in 1904 and described as the first modern wristwatch, a new milestone was reached with the Tank. Its design, which can be best described as pristine simplicity, displays the most essential lines of any timepiece. The case, lugs and bracelet perfectly merge to become one, reflecting a search for pure form. This harmony is especially highlighted by the brancards, two parallel vertical bars which prolong the case's square shape and connect it with the bracelet. This distinctive feature echoed the silhouette of the armoured vehicles that had recently been introduced by the American army on the battlefields of World War I, from which the Tank watch borrowed its name. A timeless icon, the Tank boasts a strong creative potential which has invited many variations over the decades. First appeared in 1928, the Tankà Guichets (French for hatches) is distinguished by its ultimate sobriety, focusing on the most essential: the time is only indicated by two apertures. The traditional dial disappears, emphasizing the purity of the case with its clean lines and precise proportions. The watch is also characterised by its numerical display, featuring revolving discs. The hour disc was powered by a "jumping" mechanism, the minute disc by a continuous mechanism. Historically, the production of Tankà Guichets is rare and was mainly concentrated during the late 1920s and 1930s, with one of the first creations acquired by the Maharajah of Patiala and today preserved within the Maison's heritage collection. The Tankà Guichets might also have been a way to answer a specific demand from the then-market, to provide wristwatches with dials that could be protected, especially during sporting activities that were becoming popular. In 2025, Cartier Privé revisits the Tank à Guichets aesthetic with a platinum model, limited to a numbered edition of 200 pieces. The wristwatch is powered by a hand-wound 9755 MC movement, a calibre with jumping hours and dragging minutes, crafted exclusively for the occasion. The satin-finish case contrasts with the polished horizontal brancards, enhancing the watch's silhouette. The central face is in brushed platinum, unveiling a new disposition: the two apertures are positioned at an angle; while the discreet crown at 12 o'clock pays tribute to the original 1928 timepiece. Sophistication of the watchmaking technique meets refinement of the design - an emblematic expression of the Cartier style. Tankà Gulchets wristwatch, 1928 Cartier Collection
