Among the seven unique pieces of the inaugural TAOS collection, ‘Ondes’ is the quietest and, in some ways, the most conceptually complete. Where its siblings reach for color, this watch, whose name means waves, works almost entirely in white, transcending its monochromatic appearance to bring mechanics and art into harmony. It is a piece that rewards patience, revealing its depth gradually as light moves across the dial. That depth is built from a single material treated with unusual ambition. The dial consists of layer upon layer of engraved mother-of-pearl, the iridescent surfaces cut and worked so that the engraving seems to continue endlessly, creating mesmerizing patterns that suggest the rhythmic movement of water. The central idea is dialogue: the patterns on the dial deliberately echo the engraving on the movement below, so the decorative language flows uninterrupted from the face of the watch into its mechanism. That mechanism is the exclusive self-winding calibre VOP318, created for TAOS by Télôs, with bridges conceived from the outset as surfaces for elaborate hand engraving and a power reserve of around 72 hours. Delivered raw to Atelier Olivier Vaucher, its components are engraved, chamfered, and satin-finished by hand, with rosettes and swirling motifs inspired by the movement’s inner workings, roughly 100 hours of work in itself. Developed under watchmaker and CEO Olivier Gaud, ‘Ondes’ is a unique piece in the brand’s 38 mm case.
