Sequins have illuminated fine clothing since the Middle Ages, when tiny discs of gold and silver were hand-embroidered onto the garments of monarchs and dignitaries to catch the candlelight. Over the centuries they moved from Renaissance court dress to the dazzling costumes of Parisian cabaret and, eventually, to the avant-garde creations of the great haute couture houses. Stitched by hand onto fabric, they form patterns in which each disc registers the smallest shift in light, draping a silhouette in continuous, moving brilliance. The TAOS ‘Sequins’ translates that luminous language into horology. The dial begins with raised hand engraving, sculpted reliefs that echo the ornamentation of couture embellishment. Translucent enamels are fired over the engraving in subtle gradations of red, burgundy, and rose, so that the surface shimmers with ever-changing glimmers as the watch moves. Hand-engraved and hand-painted gold appliques punctuate the composition, and delicate gem-setting completes it, an alchemy of gold, enamel, and engraving that gives the dial unusual depth. The result is a fabric of light in which brilliance is forever suspended, a piece that comes alive in the rhythm of illumination around it. Executed by the artisans of Atelier Olivier Vaucher in Geneva and developed under watchmaker and CEO Olivier Gaud, the ‘Sequins’ is a unique piece requiring a thousand and one hours of work. Together with the ‘Savile Row’ and the ‘Dentelle’, it completes the 2025 trilogy through which TAOS pays tribute to exceptional fabrics.
