‘Odonata’ takes its name from the dragonfly family, but this is vision rather than naturalistic representation. The dial composes a hybrid world at the border of plant and animal, a waking dream in which what appear to be flowers are actually wings, imagined as a secret pond where light glides over transparencies and reveals unsuspected depths. Rendered in sky blues, mauves, and iridescent white, with diamonds set on the bezel and lugs of its 18K white gold case, it is the most ambitious dial TAOS has ever undertaken. The ambition is dimensional as much as decorative. A dial can rarely exceed 1.3 mm in thickness, yet ‘Odonata’ is built on several levels. On a hand-engraved white gold base sculpted in high relief sit appliques of translucent paillonné enamel, diamond-set touches, and mother-of-pearl elements. Above them, plique-à-jour elements of translucent Grand Feu enamel, fired without metal backing like miniature stained glass, let light traverse the dial, so colors ignite, dim, and vibrate with each movement of the wrist. At the center of each dragonfly, a flat ornamental stone anchors the architecture of reliefs. The watch is animated by the exclusive calibre VOP318, created by Swiss movement maker Télôs at the brand’s request: automatic winding, with 72 hours of power reserve, and bridges designed to give the engraver’s burin maximum space. Hand engraving a single calibre takes more than 150 hours by one artisan. Developed under watchmaker and CEO Olivier Gaud in a 38 mm white gold case, ‘Odonata’ represents over 1,000 hours of work.
